Multan, known as the “City of Saints,” is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, located in southern Punjab, Pakistan. It is a city steeped in history, spirituality, and cultural richness. Its ancient streets are lined with magnificent Sufi shrines, bustling bazaars, and vibrant handicrafts that reflect centuries of tradition. From the stunning architecture of the tomb of Shah Rukn-e-Alam to the colorful tile work of Bahauddin Zakariya’s shrine, Multan offers visitors a deep sense of connection to the region’s spiritual and cultural past.
Just a short journey from Multan lies Uch Sharif, another sacred and historic town that adds immense value to the region’s tourism appeal. Uch Sharif was once a center of Islamic learning and Sufi mysticism and is home to some of the most beautiful and unique monuments in South Asia. The shrines of Bibi Jawindi, Jalaluddin Surkh-Posh Bukhari, and others in Uch are architectural marvels, showcasing intricate blue tile work and Persian-influenced design. Tourists prioritize the Shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam for its massive dome (one of the largest in Asia) and the Shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya. They often ask about the best time to visit to witness Sufi rituals or the evening lighting.
Multan is world-famous for Kashi Kari. Foreigners often ask for directions to authentic workshops (rather than just showrooms) to see artisans hand-painting the iconic blue and white ceramics.
This is a common question. While Multan is generally safe, local regulations for foreigners can sometimes be strict. Foreign tourists do need an escort.
Since Multan is notoriously hot (temperatures can exceed 50°C in summer), the most frequent advice sought is about the winter window (November to February) when the weather is mild.
